Basketball has grown a lot over the last decade in New Zealand and this is due to the international sucess we had gained. New Zealand performed well in the 2002 FIBA Worldchampionships. We came an incredible 4th (U.S.A came 6th) which put us on the map. This has resulted in increased popularity and funds for Basketball in NZ so now its easier than ever to get involved. The national team is called the Tall blacks and are currently ranked 13th in the world rankings.
It is very easy to get into Basketball today. If you go to school, then speak to your sports coordinator for more info. Another option is looking at your regions Basketball site and seeing if you can create or join a team in a social or competitive league. If you are really keen then you could even start your own competition at school or a recreation centre.
